Moe: What
do you do to promote your book(s)?
Janet Evanovich:
Internet, newsletter, signings, television, newspaper, radio.
Moe: What
method or methods of promotion have you used that works well?
Janet Evanovich:
Newsletter, Internet, Television
Moe: What
method or methods of promotion have you used that have not
worked well?
Janet Evanovich:
I tried hiring a publicist once. They did nothing for me.
My webmaster/daughter Alex does a fabulous job promoting me
as well as my St. Martin's publicist, Dori Weintraub.
Moe: Where
did you learn how to promote your books? Is there a special
place or places where you find good promotion information?
Janet Evanovich:
My daughter graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography
and learned all about self promotion. Plus she has the skills
to make the newsletter, the site, and do any art/design work
needed. It's hard to promote yourself and write a book. I'm
lucky to have such a talented daughter as part of my team.
Moe: Do
you like to promote? Or do you find it frustrating?
Janet Evanovich:
It's both fun and frustrating.
Moe: Have
you been interviewed as an author? By which mediums?
Janet Evanovich:
TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, Internet
Moe: Do
you have any good promotion tips for your fellow authors that
you would like to share?
Janet Evanovich:
Self promotion only works if your publisher is cooperating.
The truth is only your publisher can make you a star. If they
don't ship enough books to the stores there's very little
you can do to help sales. Better to save your time and money
and write the next book.
Moe: Please
add a short bio, your personal website url, and your publisher(s)
url for your book's page(s).

PERPETRATOR
CASE FILE: JANET EVANOVICH
Perpetrator
Name and Alias: Janet Evanovich (AKA: Jersey Janet).
DOB:
Yeah, right, that's happening.
Wanted
For: Offences against literary convention. Since
1994, she has been a serial offender, breaking every rule
in the publishing industry while consistently hijacking the
bestseller lists. Popular mystery novels (eighth due in June)
feature Stephanie Plum, Jersey-girl bounty hunter. Milieu
shmilieu: her main character mostly lives and works in Trenton
and environs. The way she writes it, you can smell it.
Previous
Offenses (1986-1992): First score was $2,000 for
a romance novel. Wrote 12 of those in all, mostly for Bantam
Loveswept. Quit when she "ran out of sex positions."
Current
M.O.: After blowing off the bodice rippers, developed
new style and subject matter over the course of a two-year
"retooling." Hung with street cops and law enforcement
types, absorbed the way they talked, thought and acted. Learned
about guns, mace, handcuffs, arrest procedures and cursing
like a stevedore. Created Stephanie Plum as "every women"
(assuming every women is thirty-something, coif challenged,
saddled with a wacky family, devoted to a hamster, and prone
to checking out any male who happens to look good in a T-shirt).
Known Associates:
Has drawn entire family into enterprise, Evanovich Inc. Husband
Pete, a math Ph.D., manages the business. Daughter Alex does
the web site (which is, no lie, among the best in the industry
with three million hits a month). Son Peter handles the finances.
Jersey Janet churns out a book a year.
Early background:
Graduated from South River High School, South
River, New Jersey. Studied art for four years at Douglass
College (the women's college of Rutgers U.) Developed rash
from pigment and took up writing instead. Rejection letters
by the pound drove her to panty hose and an office temp job.
Rescued soon thereafter when last unsolicited manuscript finally
sold.
Last Known
Residence: New Hampshire, near Dartmouth. Log House
on a hilltop with a view of the Connecticut River.
Big Scores:
Crime Writers Association John Creasey Memorial, Last Laugh
and Silver Dagger Awards, Left Coast Lefty Award, Independent
Mystery Booksellers Association's Dilys Award (two-time winner).
Distinguishing
Characteristics: Attitude and self-confidence that
comes from doing it her own way. Rowdy writing style, full
of color and humor. Blue-collar approach to making a living.
Commitment to delivering her readers a fast furious funny
read.
Hobbies:
Shopping (malls preferred), fast food (Cheez Doodles and Egg
McMuffins), comic books and happy movies.
Usual Attire:
Sweat pants, hard-tread Cat boots, Aqua-net.
Conclusion:
Approach the author with caution. Evanovich's books are addictive,
and she shows no sign of slowing down. Many casual paperback
readers, thinking they can quit Plum anytime, have moved up
to hard covers. Jersey Janet isn't the shy retiring type (her
last book launch featured a band, a biker and a drag queen)
and is determined that the message about the Plum series gets
out to fun-loving mystery freaks everywhere.
Thank
you Janet!
